In All Its Glory: Oscars Roundup

With last night’s spectacular 86th Academy Awards, another showbiz awards season has finally come to an end. The ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, celebrated the finest actors and actresses, technical achievements and films of 2013 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles.

The big winners on the night were, unsurprisingly, Gravity and 12 Years A Slave – the latter took Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as securing a Best Supporting Actress nod for Lupita Nyong’o (pipping J-Law to the post); the former won all the technical categories, as well as a Best Director award for Alfonso Cuaron. Other winners included the expected nods for Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club (taking Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively) and Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine (Best Actress). American Hustle’s support drained away at the final hour and it took home no prizes.

The evening generated its fair share of news stories as usual, both on the red carpet and during the ceremony. There was pizza, Jennifer Lawrence falling over (again) and mispronunciation (Adele Nazeem anyone?). Other trending hashtags included #Cumberbomb, #PoorLeo and of course #OscarSelfie, for which DeGeneres persuaded Hollywood’s great and good to pose for a pic that promptly became the most-retweeted post in Twitter history and briefly crashed the site.

The full breakdown of winners (and the other nominees) is as below. Winners are in bold, with my choices in italics. Those categories that I successfully predicted (!) are in bold/italics. And who knows, maybe next year I’ll manage to stay up and watch it all unfold live…
