Review: Thor: A Dark World

I eagerly anticipate every new Marvel offering, and this was no exception. Indeed, waiting three whole days before watching it might be a new personal record. Thankfully, it was most definitely worth the wait.

The story resumes two (Earth) years after the end of the first film (and following the events of Avengers Assemble). Thor (Chris Hemsworth) – now all grown up and (mostly) sensible – is keeping the peace in the nine realms, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is in a secure cell in the Asgard dungeons and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) is in London on the trail of disturbances in the space-time continuum. However, this is comic-book land and calm never reigns for long. Right on cue, the dark elves, led by Malekith, begin plotting their comeback, and a new threat – the Aether – is set to wreak havoc.

With its trademark mix of humour, action and a smattering of romance/bromance, Thor Part 2 is a more than capable sequel. Hemsworth refrains from taking his top off (most of the time), Hiddleston still steals all the best lines and Portman manages always to look fabulous, even in wellies. Add to that Greenwich taking one for the team and the finest Marvel cameo ever and you have movie gold. While it may not be as Oscar-worthy as many of its fellow releases this month, it is damn good fun.

If you’re a Marvel fan, you won’t be disappointed. If you’re not, what are you waiting for?!
